Enviromenstrual week- why switch to reusable period protection

Ditch disposables sanitary pads - Make your periods plastic free
This week it's enviromenstrual week and alongside our partners Citytosea, we're raising awareness on talk about make our periods not just more eco-friendly but skin friendly and comfortable too. It's not just the impact of marine pollution from period plastics, with disposable pads, tampons and tampon applicators being the 5th largest waste item to wash up on European beaches.
It's also the plastic used in disposable sanitary products. Did you know for example that a pack of 12 big brand maxi pads contains as much plastic a 5 plastic bags? Crazy.
Or that in the UK alone, last year, 200,000 tonnes of landfill was created by menstrual waste?
Or that toilet and sewer blockages from wipes, pads and tampons add an extra £100 MILLION to our water bills each year?
Sometimes if we're talking about our reusable cloth sanitary pads or period and pee proof pants at exhibitions, we can tell the other party isn't convinced, usually by the disgusted / horrified look they have on their face.
To be fair, it's particularly amusing when it's a man who has been accidentally stroking the cloth sanitary pads thinking that they are some sort of fluffy seat belt protector.
'What, you mean you bleed all over them and then put them in the washing machine with all your other washing? What about my husband's shirts? That's disgusting!'
Setting aside the 1950's housewife attitude which makes me cringe, personally a tiny amount* of blood being washed out in a washing machine as part of a mixed washload is a much less disgusting option than 200,000 tonnes of landifll. If you don't believe me, ask anyone who is unfortunate enough to live downwind of a landfill sire....
In terms of the eco impact of this additional washing, by our reckoning one periods worth of washing equates to 1kg maximum of washing per month. If you've got a fairly standard 7kg washing machine, that's not even two additional loads of washing per annum, approximately 100litres of water and the grand cost of about £1 between washing powder and electricity.

*I am talking TINY! The average washing machine uses 50 litres of water per load. If you're washing an entire periods worth of pants and pads, that's only 60ml of blood, which works out at 0.12% blood to water!
